Captain Pam: Charting Her Own Course on the Gulf

By Emily

With the wind in her sails and the crystal‑clear Gulf stretching endlessly ahead, Captain Pam stands exactly where she belongs. Smile’N Wave Sailing Adventures isn’t just a boat ride; it’s an experience of firsts, of laughter, of memories that families carry long after the salt has dried from their skin.
In this exclusive interview, Captain Pam opens up about her journey, one shaped by resilience, womanhood, and a lifelong pull toward the water.

Where It All Began

Pam grew up on the water, but it was more than a childhood pastime. It was her grounding force. “I’ve just always had a love for the water,” she said. “It’s where I feel the most freedom.” That freedom eventually became purpose, and then a business that now brings families together in a world that rarely slows down.

Becoming the Captain She Was Meant to Be

Her path to becoming a captain wasn’t marked by a single defining moment. Instead, it was built through countless small ones. “It wasn’t just one moment,” she explains. “It was a bunch of little ones, seeing families enjoying the boat, watching my kids see me out there, and getting to show people Destin‑Fort Walton Beach.” Those moments formed a quiet but powerful truth: she was meant to lead.

Leading With Strength, Heart, and Purpose

Running her own sailing business means wearing many hats: captain, guide, mentor, and role model. “Learning to lead, showing other people they can lead, and that they can do hard things… that’s what has shaped me into the leader and person I am today,” she said. Her leadership philosophy is simple: Lead by example. Stay grounded. Never back down from a challenge.

Navigating a Male‑Dominated Industry

The boating world hasn’t always welcomed women at the helm. Pam has felt that. But she never let it stop her. “There are always going to be challenges,” she said. “You just don’t give up. You keep going and show people what you’re capable of.” Pam doesn’t argue with assumptions, she outperforms them. Every safe charter, every confident call at the helm, every family stepping off the boat smiling… that’s proof she is creating a legacy in Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

Creating Moments That Last

Ask her what she loves most, and she doesn’t hesitate. “The people,” she said. “Watching families relax, seeing kids get off their phones, watching moms enjoy the moment, it means the world to me.” On her boat, something shifts.

Stress dissolves.

Time slows.

Families reconnect.

From timid kids learning to raise the sails to parents finally breathing deeply again, every trip becomes a memory stitched into their family story. “You can’t step on the boat and leave with the same stress you came with,” she said. “You just feel restored.”

A Woman’s Legacy on the Water

To Pam, Women’s History Month is both a celebration and a responsibility. “We’ve come a long way,” she said. “I’m thankful for the women who have paved the way and I hope I can be one of those women too.” Her message to women and advice she would give to anyone trying to pursue their passion is bold and beautifully simple: “Do it. Don’t wait. Just go for it. Even if it’s hard, you can do it.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

If a young girl watches her at the helm, Pam hopes she sees one thing: “You can do hard things. You can do anything you put your mind to.” she said. That belief is woven into every charter she leads.

Redefining Success

For Captain Pam, success isn’t measured in numbers. “When people step off the boat and say it was the best experience… that’s success,” she says. “Waking up with a smile on my face and being able to do this for a living, I am truly blessed.”

More Than a Boat Ride

Looking ahead, she hopes Smile’N Wave Sailing Adventures becomes more than a business. She hopes it becomes a legacy of joy, connection, and memories that families carry for a lifetime. “I hope families remember these moments forever,” she says. “That it becomes part of their story.” Because for Captain Pam, it all comes down to this:

The smiles.

The memories.

And the wave goodbye that promises you’ll return.
