The SS UNITED STATES finds her new home

DEPLOYMENT UPDATE:

Okaloosa County, Florida – The SS United States is one step closer to becoming the World’s Largest Artificial Reef. The vessel will be deployed in the Gulf about 22 NM southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, the second week of November 2026. This activity is weather-dependent, and dates can change.

The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners is working with our safety and security partners for a safe and efficient deployment. This is an exciting move forward to create a one-of-a-kind resource for the environment and for our tourism industry.

Once the fastest ocean liner in the world, the SS United States is preparing for her next record-breaking journey–becoming the world’s largest artificial reef. Soon, wildlife and divers will be able to explore this historic vessel right off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

First launched in 1952, the SS United States was celebrated for her speed, strength and craftsmanship–built to serve as both a luxury liner and a potential military vessel.

After 50+ years of retirement and several failed plans for restoration, the SS United States is finally beginning a new voyage. Purchased by Okaloosa County in 2024, she is now undergoing essential remediation and assessments to take on a new life as the world’s largest artificial reef. Her new home off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach will create a thriving habitat for marine life and establish a premier global diving destination.

Not a diver? You’ll still be able to experience the SS United States on dry land with an interactive museum coming soon to Okaloosa County.
