Research + Citizen Science
From the crystal-clear water of the Gulf to thriving inland habitats across Northwest Florida, understanding the environment starts with observation, data + collaboration. In Destin–Fort Walton Beach, research efforts supported through the Natural Resources teams help provide that foundation.
Through species monitoring, public reporting + ongoing field observations, a wide range of marine and land based life is studied to better understand ecosystem health + habitat trends over time. This includes sightings and data collection of land-based species like feral hogs + gopher tortoises to invasive inhabitants of the Gulf like the lionfish population.
Each report, observation + dataset contributes to a larger picture, helping guide conservation priorities, support habitat management + inform responsible stewardship of natural resources throughout the region.
By combining research with community participation, these efforts strengthen our ability to protect the diverse ecosystems that make Destin–Fort Walton Beach unique.
