Captain Joe

How many years have you been a captain?

I started as a deckhand on Silver Lining–Captain Ed Shields and I worked together for 21 years. I got my captain's license in 2006.

What’s special about your fishing trips?

I love to be on the back deck helping customers reel in the BIG ONES! when the conditions are right. You may even be able to squeeze a couple of magic tricks out of me!

Why is it important for teens to experience Reel Time?

As a dad of teens, I know how important it is to teach younger generations how to fish and properly release them for future families to enjoy.

Tell us about your first mate:

Zach has been my first mate for 3 years–he jumped right in and learned what my fishing style was. He shows up before me every day and he's great with families.

What’s special about your boat?

We're one of the last wooden boats in Destin. Wooden boats just seem to raise bigger fish.

Zach looks forward to being out on the water every day and thinks being first mate is the best job you can have. He loves making sure teens have fun whether they’ve fished 1,000 times or it’s their first time.
