SS UNITED STATES Remediation Updates

Preparing the SS UNITED STATES to become the world’s largest artificial reef has taken over a year of preparation, hundreds of man hours, and thoughtful preservation. While she’s not quite ready to be deployed, there has been a lot of progress to get her there. Check out the remediation updates below:

  • All fuel tanks have been emptied and are mostly clean. Final gas-free inspections have begun. About 50% of tanks have been inspected and cleared
  • A-Deck, Main, Upper, Promenade, Sun, Sports and Navigation decks are completely remediated and final inspections have begun with no negative findings. This included the removal of ventilation system, exfoliating paint, and wiring
  • In total, more than 200 samples have been collected of materials from around the vessel to ensure all regulated levels of PCBs are being fully remediated
  • All exterior exfoliating paint has been removed and disposed of. If additional paint requires removal, it will be removed prior to deployment
  • Both funnels, radar mast and propellor have been removed and stored for land base museum
  • Hundreds of vessel artifacts have been removed and retained for the museum
  • More than 400 portholes have been removed and are being retained
  • 100% of green neotex exterior floor covering (high PCB concentration) has been removed and disposed of appropriately
  • Five additional storm anchor/mooring chains installed for increased safety while in port
  • Hundreds of law enforcement personnel from around the country have been engaged for safety and security during deployment. Being led by FWC, USCG and Okaloosa County Public Safety
  • Deployment location has been selected. Side scan sonar and visual bottom surveys were conducted last week to verify that there are no existing historical or natural resources that would be impacted by the deployment
  • Partnering with researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Louisiana State University to conduct biological, physical and chemical monitoring of the vessel post deployment
